For the brownie layer:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Shortbread layer: Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Mix in flour and salt, press into pan, and bake for 15 minutes.
  3. Brownie layer: Whisk melted butter, sugars, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in cocoa, flour, baking powder, salt, and chocolate chips. Pour over shortbread layer and bake for 20–25 minutes.
  4. Cool: Cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes
