For the Salisbury Steak:
- 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Gravy:
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
- 1 teaspoon ketchup (for gravy)
Instructions
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
- Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to a plate.
- Cook the Vegetables: In the same skillet, cook onions and mushrooms until softened. Sprinkle flour over them, then slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup.
- Add the Patties: Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and cook for 10 minutes until fully cooked through.
- Serve: Enjoy hot with mashed potatoes or rice.
Notes
- For a richer gravy, stir in 1 tablespoon of heavy cream or a splash of red wine at the end.
- You can also use ground turkey as a lighter alternative to beef.
