Description

Delicious and comforting Salisbury Steak recipe with savory beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom onion gravy. This classic American dish is perfect for a cozy dinner any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steak: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to a plate.
  3. Cook the Vegetables: In the same skillet, cook onions and mushrooms until softened. Sprinkle flour over them, then slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup.
  4. Add the Patties: Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and cook for 10 minutes until fully cooked through.
  5. Serve: Enjoy hot with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • For a richer gravy, stir in 1 tablespoon of heavy cream or a splash of red wine at the end.
  • You can also use ground turkey as a lighter alternative to beef.
