Description

This luxurious surf-and-turf recipe pairs perfectly seared filet mignon steaks with succulent broiled lobster tails, enhanced by garlic herb butter and simple seasonings. Ideal for an elegant dinner, it combines rich flavors and a tender texture for a romantic, restaurant-quality meal at home.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak and Lobster

  • 2 filet mignon steaks (6–8 oz each)
  • 2 lobster tails (4–6 oz each), thawed if frozen
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Optional Garlic Herb Butter for Serving

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steaks: Let the steaks sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes, allowing even cooking. Pat them dry with paper towels, then season generously with salt and black pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Sear the steaks for 2–3 minutes on each side until a beautiful golden crust forms. Add 1 tablespoon of butter, minced garlic, and fresh thyme or rosemary to the pan. Tilt the pan slightly and spoon the melted butter over the steaks repeatedly for 1–2 minutes to baste them, enhancing flavor and juiciness. Transfer the skillet to a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) and cook the steaks for about 4–6 minutes for medium-rare doneness. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow juices to redistribute.
  2. Prepare the Lobster Tails: Using kitchen shears, carefully cut the top shell of each lobster tail lengthwise down the center, exposing the meat. Gently pull the lobster meat upward so it rests on top of the shell for even cooking. Brush the lobster meat lightly with olive oil and season with a pinch of salt. Place the prepared lobster tails on a foil-lined baking sheet. Broil them 5–6 inches from the heating element for 7–9 minutes until the meat becomes opaque, firm, and lightly browned. Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small pan with a bit of minced garlic (optional) to serve warm alongside the lobster tails.
  3. Serve: Plate each filet mignon alongside a lobster tail. Top with the optional garlic herb butter, or serve with the melted garlic butter and fresh lemon wedges on the side to squeeze over the seafood and steak for a bright finish. Pair with sides like roasted asparagus or mashed potatoes to complete your elegant surf-and-turf dinner.

Notes

  • Pair this dish with roasted asparagus, creamy mashed potatoes, or a fresh arugula salad for balanced accompaniments.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure perfect doneness: 130°F (54°C) for medium-rare steak and 140°F (60°C) for cooked lobster.
  • The garlic herb butter can be prepared ahead and refrigerated for convenience.
  • Letting steak rest after cooking improves juiciness and tenderness.
  • This recipe yields two generous servings, perfect for a romantic dinner.
