- 4 cups all-purpose flour

- 1 teaspoon salt

- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional)
- 1 cup raisins or currants (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using). Add raisins or currants if desired.
- Add wet ingredients: Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead and shape: Transfer the dough to a floured surface, knead lightly, shape into a round loaf, and place on the baking sheet.
- Score and bake: Score an “X” on top, brush with melted butter, and bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Let the bread cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a savory version, omit sugar and raisins, and add herbs or cheese.
