Description
French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes is a delicious twist on the classic sloppy joe sandwich, featuring caramelized onions, savory ground beef, and gooey melted cheese on toasted buns.
Ingredients
Scale
Ground Beef Sloppy Joes:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Caramelized Onions:
- 2 medium yellow onions (thinly sliced)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Additional Ingredients:
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
- 4 hamburger buns (toasted)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and sugar, cooking slowly for 12–15 minutes until golden and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
- Cook Ground Beef: Push the onions to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks, about 5–6 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add Flavors: Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth, stirring to combine. Pour in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 2–3 minutes until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low.
- Melt Cheese: Place a slice of cheese over the beef mixture, cover the skillet, and let the cheese melt for 1–2 minutes.
- Assemble: Spoon the cheesy beef and onion mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately.
Notes
- For extra flavor, toast the buns with a little butter before serving.
- You can also use ground turkey or chicken as a lighter option.
- If you like a stronger onion flavor, stir in ½ teaspoon onion powder along with the garlic.
