Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened black cocoa powder (or dark Dutch-processed cocoa)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee or hot water
Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, vinegar, and vanilla until smooth.
- Combine: Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients, mix until just combined. Slowly add hot coffee/water, stir until smooth.
- Bake: Divide batter into pans, bake for 30–35 minutes. Cool cakes on wire racks.
- Make Frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter, add powdered sugar gradually, mix in vanilla and salt until fluffy.
- Frost Cake: Frost one layer, place second layer on top, frost top and sides. Chill before slicing.
Notes
- Black cocoa gives the cake its color and flavor.
- Substitute with dark Dutch-processed cocoa if black cocoa is unavailable.
