Description

Potatoes:

  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

Cheese Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Garnish:

  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare baking dish: Preheat oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Make cheese sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter, sauté garlic, whisk in flour, then gradually add milk and cream. Season with salt, pepper, onion powder, and paprika. Stir in cheddar cheese until smooth.
  3. Layer potatoes and sauce: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the dish, pour half of the cheese sauce over them, and repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce. Top with remaining cheese.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 25–30 minutes until golden brown and tender. Let rest before serving, garnish with parsley if desired.
